Project Description

Project Background

As part of Dubai’s Smart City initiative and commitment to sustainable infrastructure, the municipality launched a project to upgrade the lighting system along a 12-kilometer stretch of ring road. The existing high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights were energy-intensive, required frequent maintenance, and provided poor color rendering. The goal was to transition to solar-powered LED lighting while maintaining highway safety standards.

Challenge

The project required high-output lighting capable of meeting international highway illumination standards (average 20 lux), while operating entirely on solar power in Dubai’s extreme desert climate where summer temperatures regularly exceed 45°C. The system also needed to withstand sandstorms and provide reliable operation during the winter fog season when visibility is critically reduced.

Solution

Solaralite supplied 320 units of SPL-100 Split Solar Street Lights with enhanced specifications for the desert environment:

  • High-efficiency monocrystalline solar panels (200W) with anti-reflective coating optimized for desert sun conditions, achieving 22% conversion efficiency.
  • 100W LED light heads with precision optics delivering Type III medium beam distribution for uniform road coverage at 12-meter mounting height.
  • LiFePO4 battery systems with 3-day autonomy and thermal management rated for -30°C to +70°C operation.
  • Smart controllers with remote monitoring via GSM, enabling real-time status tracking and automated fault alerts.

Installation & Commissioning

The installation was executed over 4 months with zero road closures during peak traffic hours. All work was conducted between 11 PM and 5 AM to minimize disruption. Each pole was equipped with a galvanized steel foundation rated for 200 km/h wind loads and an anti-corrosion coating system designed for 25-year service life in coastal desert conditions.

Service Life

The Dubai ring road solar lighting upgrade has delivered exceptional performance since commissioning. The transition from HPS to solar LED lighting achieved an 85% reduction in energy consumption while improving road illumination quality by 60%. The cool white 5000K LED light provides superior color rendering (CRI > 70), enhancing driver visibility and reaction times.

The smart monitoring system has enabled proactive maintenance, with real-time alerts reducing fault response time by 90% compared to the previous manual inspection schedule. During the winter fog season, the enhanced illumination has contributed to a 30% reduction in fog-related traffic incidents. The project's success has led to Dubai Municipality approving Phase 2, which will extend solar lighting coverage by an additional 20 kilometers of ring road.
